Forrester Consumer Forum 2009 and eMarketing Conference Atlanta 2009

I will be attending the Forrester Leadership Board: Interactive Marketing Council Meeting in Chicago, IL October 26 and the Forrester Consumer Forum 2009 in Chicago, IL October 27-28, 2009.

The Interactive Marketing Council is a great group of eBusiness, eCommerce and eMarketing leaders from an array of different companies. I always learn a lot from the other members when we get together for these face-to-face meetings. Forrester is constantly innovating ways to make these meetings better and more interactive. I am looking forward to seeing several friends and colleagues I have not seen in many months.

The Forrester Consumer Forum is one of the best conferences I attend every year. The insights on the consumer landscape, social web marketing, interactive and integrated marketing are outstanding. I am looking forward to filling my brain with new ideas, data and tactics we can use to reach our Newell Rubbermaid consumers.

The theme for this years conference is "The Three Dimensional Consumer: Creating Breakthrough Multichannel Relationships." This fits in well with my thoughts and theories around the social web ecosystem and integrated marketing.

The hashtag for the Forrester Consumer Forum 2009 is #FCF09 and they have a very cool iPhone app that you can download from iTunes or get here developed by ThoughtWorks. The Twitter id is @Forrester.

Here is a summary of what to expect at the forum:

"The Web has come a long way — but not far enough. Many transactional and even brand Web sites began as outgrowths of the catalog or phone channels. As a result, most online experiences are one-dimensional and treat all customers the same, and most sites support buying experiences but fail to engage customers before and after they make a purchase or brand decision. Executives seeking to create profitable relationships must evolve online channel efforts to support three-dimensional consumers. In short, it's time for the Web to grow up and serve as the center of the relationship that companies have with their customers.

Three-dimensional consumers have needs, interests, and questions. To please these demanding customers, earn their repeat business, and have them recommend you to their networks — offline and online — you'll need to effectively engage them as they plan their purchase or brand decisions, help them find the most relevant value as they're buying, and support them during and between their purchases and interactions — all across multiple channels. At this Event, leading Forrester analysts will present research on how evolving consumer online behavior demands that firms step up efforts to engage them, and executives will share their companies' best practices for creating breakthrough multichannel relationships."

I will also be the Day 2, October 29, 2009 Keynote Speaker at eM9 eMarketing Conference Atlanta 2009. I will be discussing Newell Rubbermaid's eBusiness, eMarketing and Social Web Marketing strategies and tactics.

I am very excited and honored to have been asked to deliver a presentation at this conference again. I last presented at eM7 in 2007.

The hashtag for eM9 eMarketing Conference Atlanta 2009 is #eMAtlanta and the Twitter id for the event is @eMAtlanta. Looking forward to seeing everyone at this conference.

AMA Atlanta Panel Presentation: Advocacy In The Digital Age

I was honored today to be part of a panel presenting ideas, concepts and case studies related to social media, social web and interactive marketing to the American Marketing Association - Atlanta Chapter. It was an energized, sold out crowd that provided insightful and eloquent questions during the Q&A.

The panel: Advocacy in the Digital Age was moderated by Glen Caruso (@glencaruso), FY 2008-2009 AMA Atlanta President, and Director of Advertising Sales at Tremor Media.

Panel Description:

Social media is greatly impacting the lives of everyday people and as well as the marketers that are trying to reach them. After all, online communities provide businesses with an efficient way to reach targeted segments of the population as well as monitor their customers’ opinions about products, services and brands. But what does this sea change really mean for brands? Join us to learn how to:

  • Effectively tap into this groundswell of activity.

  • Leverage your most passionate fans to drive bottom line value.

  • Foster brand advocacy while adhering to the delicate and varied mores that govern marketing’s role within social networks

  • Panel members included:

Thought Leader Perspective on Social Media and Advocacy - Dave Rollo
(@iRollo) – SVP, Director of Digital Media Strategy, 22squared

WOM as Social Media – Dave Balter (@DaveBalter), CEO, BzzAgent Dave will look at the role of WOM in creating advocacy and spark a discussion of what social media means for brands. Balter will explore a selection of word-of-mouth generating success stories and highlight how marketers have effectively engaged with brand advocates and measured the outcome. Mr. Balter is also the author of several books including: The Word Of Mouth Manual: Volume II and Grapevine: Why Buzz Was a Fad but Word of Mouth is Forever.

Brand Case Study - Bert DuMars (@bwdumars), Vice President E-Business & Interactive Marketing, Newell Rubbermaid. Bert will present how Newell Rubbermaid has successfully used social media to drive business results.

Dave Rollo and David Balter did an excellent job of framing the social web ecosystem and provided a number of statistical insights and case studies from their clients. I discussed our social media marketing efforts at our Graco Baby, Rubbermaid and Sharpie brands. See my post: Newell Rubbermaid Social Web Ecosystem Update.

I want to send a big Thank You out to the AMA Atlanta Chapter and especially Glen Caruso and Tracy Frank for running an excellent event and inviting me to participate.

Corporate Marketers Blogging, Tweeting As Part Of Their Job

Jennie Phelps, Investors Business Daily, wrote a very nice article about Newell Rubbermaid's social media/social web marketing efforts. She interviewed me about six weeks ago and wrote a nice summary and analysis on our efforts with a special focus on the Sharpie brand. The article is titled: Corporate Marketers Blogging, Tweeting As Part of their Job.

I have been thinking a lot about the Skittles interactive marketing campaign and social media marketing focused brand website. I know they have been receiving a lot of flack for their effort, but I think there are parts of their marketing program that are compelling and thought provoking. They took the concept of the "branded website is dead" and took a shot at what that might look like.

So the question is how could the parts of this marketing program that worked be executed on by brands not in the candy business? I believe there are many and will continuing exploring this as time goes on.

UGA Grady School Social Media Ecosystem Presentation

I will be presenting on Newell Rubbermaid's social media marketing efforts at the University of Georgia, Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication on March 5, 2009.

I have the privilege of presenting to both Dr. Karen Russell's and Dr. Kaye Sweetser's classes at the Athens, GA campus.

Dr. Karen Russell's blog is Teaching PR and is a good read on teaching public relations and marketing communications at the university level. She also posts her perspective on social media and other technologies that are and will impact communications.

Dr. Kaye Sweetser's blog is So This Is Mass Communication? She has been doing some interesting research on viral videos, what works and what does not.

Looking forward to seeing both of them on March 5 and all the wonderful Grady students.

Free Web Metrics Services & Insights

I have moved my explorations from social media back to interactive marketing and website metrics. I wanted to call out a couple of free services and sources of insightful information I have been using lately.

I believe your first stop for learning web analytics, industry best practices should be one of my favorite blogger and website metrics gurus: Avinash Kaushik. I have had the opportunity to hear him speak in person twice and I love his irreverent writing and presenting style. He has a humorous approach to the explanation of website metrics. Also very logical and practical. His most recent post on metrics averages and ratios is outstanding: Actively Avoid Insights: 4 Useful KPI Measurement Techniques. He has also written a book on website metrics: Web Analytics: An Hour A Day. Or you can just read his blog: Occam's Razor, which has all the content of the book for free. He always talks about how the content is free and you do not have to buy the book, just read the blog. There are also some excellent videos on YouTube. Here is a nice short one, but there are some 1 hour presentations as well:

Google Analytics - Non-Ecommerce Sites: Beyond Averages

A couple services I highly recommend for obtaining web metrics on your branded site, as well as your competitors, are Compete and Quantcast. Quantcast provides some qualitative information as well that includes estimated demographics. Remember that both services use estimates and can be off by as much as 20%. These are nice services to use in addition to your internal web metrics tools. You should also check out Google Trends for additional, online insights into your brand, competitors and industry.

We're Getting Killed By Customer Reviews Online

This is one of the best and most appropriate Dilbert comic strips I have seen in a long time. Extremely relevant and important to read and think about when you put product and services Ratings and Reviews on your branded website. Read, think and have a little laugh too.

The Smartest Big Brands In Social Media

We are honored that our Graco Baby Products brand was called out as one of the 10 Smartest Big Brands in Social Media on Mashable - February 6, 2009 - by the author: Samir Balwani. Our Graco social media efforts specifically related to Flickr community building around our products was called out. We are very proud of our Graco Baby Products social media efforts. These efforts are being led by Kim Lefko, VP of Global Marketing, and Lindsay Lebresco, Public Relations and Social Media Manager. There are also several other Graco team members actively involved with the program including Karen Hartzell.

In addition to our Flickr program, we also have a Graco Baby branded blog, car seat microsite titled "Ready For The Road Ahead," and several Twitter accounts: GracoBaby, LindsayLebresco, and KarenHartzell. Recently (December 19, 2008) we launched a new, redesigned Graco Baby branded website.

It takes several dedicated and passionate people to bring these programs to life and drive them to success. It also takes the support and guidance of agencies that work with us as partners. I want to call out two of the agencies that have actively supported these efforts: Converseon and the LBi Atlanta office.

I also want to call out another organization that has helped educate us on Social Media Marketing and Interactive Marketing: Forrester Research. They have some of the best analysts and researchers in the business and are wonderfully knowledgeable. They are also well connected throughout the industry and are great at networking you with peers and high quality agencies, consulting services and technology partners.

Finally, if you are looking for a place to start with social media marketing, get the book Groundswell by Josh Bernoff of Forrester and Charlene Li of the Altimeter Group.

Fastest Growing Internet Demographic User Group Is ... The Over 70 Year Old Crowd

Per the Pew Research Center, the fastest growing Internet User demographic is the 70 year old and up crowd. This is both amazing and fantastic and shows the true power, compelling nature and ubiquity of the Internet. Here is an eMarketer report that summarizes the finding: The Online Generation Gap Narrows.

This report also points out that when you are developing your social media and interactive marketing plans you must consider all demographics, not just the 25-45 year olds.

Also, through simple observation of my 90 year old grandmother as she emailed her friends and performed online banking and financial services management, I knew this had to be the case.

The Social Media And Interactive Marketing Evolution Marches On

Even in a challenging economy, the social media and interactive marketing evolution marches on. The movement to a society dominated by the online, broadband, and mobile world continues. You can see this change happening when firms like Amazon.com continue to grow and thrive in what some consider one of the worst economies in decades. You can also see it in the investments firms like P&G, Wal-Mart and Target are making in their eCommerce and interactive marketing efforts.

Here are some interesting articles, events and happenings:
    • The Uni-Ball brand has also started experimenting in the social media ecosystem with a Twitter Avatar (@UniBall_USA). The Uni-Ball brand also launched a powerful advertising campaign and YouTube Channel.
    • David Meerman Scott also wrote an outstanding piece on the social media efforts of the US Air Force - US Air Force Web Posting Response Assessment. The chart provided in the blog post is an outstanding tool that can be easily adapted to the private sector. It is great to see a Federal Government organization being so progressive in this area.
I am looking forward to a very bright 2009 in the social media and interactive marketing ecosystem. There is a lot to be excited about.

Social Media - Yes; Interactive Marketing - More Yes!!

It has been a while since I published anything of consequence on my blog, so I plan on making up for it this evening.

I spent a wonderful holiday season staying home and hanging out with the family. We found a beautiful, 14 month old, female Labrador that came home with us a week and a half ago. We are both getting used to each other, but she is an absolute love and is fabulous with the kids.

We also spent a fantastic week in Steamboat Springs, CO skiing. I love Steamboat and want nothing more in life than to become a ski bum, no, a resort ambassador, providing tours, telling stories and skiing all day long with tourists and locals. It is a beautiful place with a fun, small town atmosphere, hidden away (with a big airport runway) in northwest Colorado. If Steamboat ever needs a big time, Interactive Marketer Ski Bum/Resort Ambassador - Call Me!!

Now back to my topic - Social Media - Yes; Interactive Marketing - More Yes!!

While I am an advocate and proponent for social media marketing strategies and tactics, we must not forget the importance of interactive marketing and all it encompasses. Social Media is a great way to interact with consumers, but a company or brand must still have a solid, high performing website where consumers can learn about products and services. Most corporate blogs and social media services (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, FriendFeed, and others) still only receive a subset (of brand specific interest, visits and/or clickthroughs) of the consumers that visit a typical, manufacturers branded web presence.

We must also remember that the branded website is one of the last places where the company or brand still controls the majority (if not all) the content and messaging.

There are many important ways to reach your consumers beyond social media: search marketing, email marketing, banner ads (in the right places), online sponsorships, basic natural search, and product/service and how-to videos (on your website and made available to your ecommerce partners). Also, as you develop and deploy traditional marketing strategies and tactics (TV, Radio, Print, Billboard, etc.) make sure they reference back to your branded website and preferably a landing page within the branded website that is specific to the campaign. I am not a big believer in micro-sites, as I believe the branded website needs to be the destination and needs to encompass or support micro-site features as part of the landing page within the branded website. Apple Computer uses this model and I am a strong believer. I think of how many times I was enticed to the Apple site due to a specific campaign, but ended up going to other parts of their branded website to learn about other products (latest iPod, iLife, MacBook, etc...).

Another key component to remember is metrics for both your social media and interactive marketing efforts. I personally have had very good experiences with several excellent, interactive marketing measurement tools including Omniture, WebTrends, Google Analytics and ForeSee Results. There are also many emerging tools for social media marketing and I will discuss those at another time.

There are also some excellent services that bring a true ROI to your branded website. Channel Intelligence is a great solution that helps you track your consumers from entry to your site through purchase on ecommerce partner sites. I call it an Advanced Where-to-Buy solution that all manufacturers should consider. Another service that integrates social media features into your website (Ratings & Reviews, Consumer Q&A, and Consumer Stories) is BazaarVoice. This is a great service that helps your consumers learn more about your products and services through peer reviews. It will also allow your product and service development teams learn what consumers like and do not like about your products and services. Excellent insights can be discovered quickly and with very little expense...also, by responding quickly to consumer issues, you can create brand advocates and strong word-of-mouth marketing impacts.

These are some of the topics I have been thinking about while on holiday and skiing. More to come in the future.

    New Graco Baby Website Launches

Tonight we launched the next generation of our Graco Baby Website. This was a collaboration between Newell Rubbermaid and LBi. A lot of people from the Graco Brand, Corporate E-Business Team and LBi put in months of hard work to bring this new website to life. It was a huge accomplishment for the entire team.

We also launched a redesign of our Graco Baby Blog that integrated design elements from the New Graco Baby website.

We are all very excited that we were able to launch prior to the holidays.

Newell Rubbermaid Social Media Marketing Blog Posts And Articles

It has been a very active past couple of weeks for the Newell Rubbermaid social media marketing teams. We have received positive recognition for our efforts from several influential social media marketing, PR and communications bloggers. Below are a list and links to these articles and blog posts:

    • People Don't Trust Company Blogs. What You Should Do About It by Josh Bernoff - Josh wrote a highly controversial blog post and Forrester Research report on the general mistrust consumers have with corporate or brand blogs. There was considerable discussion on Twitter and in the blogosphere about this report. I think what was missed in all that discussion was the excellent corporate or brand blog framework proposed by Josh as part of his Groundswell blog post and research report. He also identified those doing brand blogging correctly including our Rubbermaid blog. Also, I believe the trust issue is important to consider and evaluate. I personally believe trust will grow as brands get better at blogging and developing content that is focused on problem solving, how to, fun, creative uses and opening a communications path for consumers to interact with brand employees. Josh Bernoff is also the author of the Groundswell book a great resource on social media marketing. Josh can be found on Twitter at @JBernoff.
A very busy couple of weeks and I want to extend my appreciation to all the authors referenced above. As usual, I learn as much from them as they from me and the Newell Rubbermaid social media marketing teams and I value their perspective on the social media ecosystem.

TAG - Technology Association of Georgia Speaking Engagement

I will be speaking at the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008 in Atlanta, GA. The topic is "Consulting 2.0 .... it's all about the customer." The discussion will focus on the following statement:

"The proliferation of Web 2.0 tools is in top gear, countless number of platforms are available out there. Early adopters of these tools are practically creating a new type of “digital divide”, those who are in Web 2.0, and those who are not."

Should be an interesting panel and conversation.

Josh Bernoff, Forrester Consumer Forum 2008 and Social Media's Rapid Growth

I attended the Forrester Consumer Forum 2008 in Dallas, TX last week and had a great time being a sponge soaking up the insights, strategies and information. I also spent time listening to Josh Bernoff discuss the dramatic growth in social network and social media use over the last year. Insights on his most recent research report can be found in this Groundswell blog post - New 2008 Social Technographics data reveals rapid growth in adoption. I also spent time listening to a couple of Josh Bernoff's presentations and sat down with him for a face-to-face discussion on potential social media efforts for our Calphalon brand.

Here is a quote from Josh Bernoff's blog that clearly articulates the incredible trajectory of social media and its influence:

"Looking at the US data, the big news in 2008 is that, not unexpectedly, social technology participation has grown rapidly. Inactives -- people untouched by social technologies -- have shriveled from 44% down to 25% of the online population. Spectators -- those who read, watch, or consumer social content -- have ballooned from 48% to 69%. If you think social technology is about to become a universal phenomenon, we just handed you a nice little bundle of evidence."

It is an amazing time to be a part of the rapidly changing interactive marketing landscape...and the entire marketing landscape.

Atlanta Web Executive Rountable at Newell Rubbermaid

On November 6, 2008 I will be hosting the Atlanta Web Executive Round Table (AWERT) at Newell Rubbermaid's new headquarters in Atlanta, GA. I will be discussing Newell Rubbermaid's social media marketing efforts related to our Graco and Rubbermaid brands. Looking forward to meeting Atlanta area interactive marketing and ebusiness leaders. Attendance expectations are high with an estimate of 30-40 attendees.
